Editor: This mixed-media piece, "Apprehension," presents us with a rather ornate, decorative scene—a doorway almost— framing a skeleton. The title, juxtaposed with the almost whimsical rendering of mortality, really sets an interesting tone, a dark fairy tale perhaps. What are your thoughts? How does this strike you? Curator: It strikes me as… well, human! Think about it: we adorn even the grim reaper with beauty, dress our fears in lace. The “member” fractured, and that little bulb hanging in the center, adds to this sense of a specific moment in time—evoking fragility. And the background pattern... does it comfort or confine? I'm not sure. Do you think there's a comfort to be found in accepting our temporary existence? Editor: It’s true that there’s something inviting about it despite the skeleton! The palette is almost pastel-like, really playing with expectations of death as scary. The symmetry too is nice, but feels like its off. Curator: Off-kilter symmetry. Like looking in a funhouse mirror—familiar, yet distorted. Like memory, wouldn't you say? Always slightly warped. Limon captures something universal with a very singular vision. Do you think he is playing on something deeply engrained in humans or something more contemporary in our zeitgeist? Editor: Perhaps it's both? Drawing on vanitas traditions while speaking to our current anxieties. It's clever. Curator: Indeed. Maybe that’s the apprehension, the tightrope walk between eras, fears and aesthetics. Food for thought! Editor: Absolutely, this was enlightening. Thanks for your time.
