Editor: This mixed-media piece is called "Inner Noise" by Jason Limon from 2019. I'm immediately struck by how the artist uses this block format to create an image that’s both playful and a bit unsettling. What kind of commentary do you think Limon is trying to make with this work? Curator: Well, seen through a historical lens, “Inner Noise” appears to grapple with a contemporary moral crisis reflected in popular surrealism. We see symbolic imagery reminiscent of morality plays—"Good" versus "Evil," visually framing a deeper anxiety. Editor: Morality plays? Curator: Think of them as early dramas, common in the medieval period, using allegorical figures to teach moral lessons. Here, the hands marked "Good" and "Evil," along with the skeletons manipulated like puppets, echo those didactic intentions but through a modern, more ambiguous lens. Editor: So you see it as a comment on manipulation, maybe in society? Curator: Exactly. Limon might be hinting at the unseen forces shaping our choices, a theme very resonant in an age of information overload and political polarization. The "noise" within, perhaps, is the struggle to discern right from wrong amidst all the competing voices. What do you make of the material choice, mixing media in this very precise, block-like manner? Editor: The mixed media aspect gives it a layered effect that reminds me of the digital spaces where many of these "competing voices" exist, which gives the impression that it's not all what it seems. I guess it’s made me think more about the role of art as a mirror to societal anxieties. Curator: Indeed, the power of imagery and its impact on our internal compass. Limon’s piece underscores how artistic expression shapes our perception of social dynamics and the constant negotiation between individual agency and external influence.
