Editor: So, this is Honoré Daumier's lithograph, "Recherche infructueuse de la planète Leverrier" from 1846. It's a black and white print, and I immediately notice the upward gaze of the figures and the multitude of stars in the sky, giving me a sense of yearning and perhaps futility. What do you see in this piece from a formalist point of view? Curator: From a formal perspective, consider first the stark contrast created by the lithographic process. Observe how the density of marks coalesce to articulate form; note especially, how Daumier uses chiaroscuro to mold the volumes of the figures and ground them to the scene. Now examine how Daumier creates implied lines – how are we invited to look upwards? How does Daumier manipulate perspective? Editor: I see. The angle definitely emphasizes the figures' upward gaze and that draws the eye skyward as well. So the visual components lead the viewer into the emotional concept. Curator: Precisely. The arrangement of these elements, lines, contrast, directs the viewer's interpretation of the image. Focus, also, on the density and quality of line to create form – the man and woman versus the open landscape, which appears much sparser by comparison. In that relationship, is the emptiness in line with the quest to see a star? Editor: That's a great observation! Now that I look at it, the detail on the people suggests a concrete search, a tangible desire versus the elusive. I never would have made that association on my own, by just looking at the contrast of textures and marks. Curator: Paying close attention to the compositional and material qualities helps one to decode visual experience in thoughtful and specific ways. Hopefully that perspective is enriching to you. Editor: Yes, absolutely. Thank you for making that so clear. Now, I have so many more questions on that idea!
