"Haven bij eb," or "Harbor at Low Tide," is a woodcut print by Bernard Essers. Essers was a Dutch artist whose life was tragically cut short during the Second World War. The sharp contrasts and stark lines of the print evoke a sense of isolation and reflect the tense atmosphere of the interwar period in Europe. The landscape, with its rigid lines and almost geometric forms, gives a feeling of order, yet there is a deep stillness in the scene. The dark, looming clouds add to a sense of foreboding, an almost palpable tension. Essers' personal experiences during a time of immense social and political change shape how we view this work. The print resonates with the artist’s personal history and the broader historical context of a Europe on the brink of upheaval. It acts as both a reflection and a premonition of the turmoil to come.
