This is a necklace design by Mathieu Lauweriks, made on paper, and it’s all about process. You can see the ghostly guidelines underneath, the scaffolding of the piece. Look at the surface of the paper – it's stained and marked, with small pools of brown, like a relic. The design itself is precise. There’s a lightness of touch, a sort of diagrammatic sensibility. The linear quality reminds me of maps or technical drawings, but it’s also full of these little flourishes that make it feel so human, like the small, handwritten annotations dotted around. These notes ground the piece in a moment in time, a personal process of creation. It reminds me a little of Hilma af Klint’s diagrammatic works. Both artists embrace ambiguity, inviting us to wander through their visual language, rather than prescribing a fixed meaning.
