This necklace, crafted by an A'shiwi artist from Zuni Pueblo, features silver and turquoise, materials deeply embedded in the cultural and economic landscape of the Southwest. Look closely, and you'll see that each small turquoise stone, carefully shaped and set, contributes to the necklace's intricate design. The silversmithing, done entirely by hand, highlights the inherent qualities of these materials. The turquoise is cool and serene, while the silver adds sheen and structure. The "squash blossom" design, with its floral motifs, reflects the natural world, which is so central to A'shiwi life and spirituality. But this necklace is not only a beautiful piece of jewelry, it also reflects the artist's skill and time, passed down through generations. These pieces became important commodities within Native communities, and beyond. So we can appreciate it as both art, and as a tangible connection to the traditions and commerce of the American Southwest.
