Willem Witsen made this drawing, "Zittend vrouwelijk naakt, naar rechts," with pen in brown and black ink, now held at the Rijksmuseum. The dominant impression is one of subdued introspection, rendered through the artist's focus on texture and form. The composition centers on the nude figure, whose pose invites a reading of vulnerability and self-containment. Witsen employs dense, rhythmic lines to build volume and shadow, creating a palpable sense of depth against a backdrop of repeating ovoid shapes. These shapes might be seen as decorative, but they also function structurally, reinforcing the flatness of the picture plane while contrasting with the curves of the body. The scale is intimate, drawing the viewer into a private moment. What's striking here is the tension between representation and abstraction. The figure is clearly delineated, yet the overall effect leans towards a study in textures and patterns, engaging with the formal concerns that were central to much of the art of this period. This work serves not just as a depiction of a nude, but as an exploration of the very nature of seeing and representing.
