Agnes Slott-Møller made this watercolor sketch on paper, titled 'Early Draft for Valdemar Sejrs homecoming from captivity,' with delicate touches and washes. The sea is evoked with horizontal strokes of grey and blue. It’s a painterly surface with very little contrast in tone, making it seem still and heavy, almost like a sigh. But then, a single figure in red is thrown against this bleak backdrop, like a flare against the heavy sea. The red figure is painted with quick, restless brushstrokes, a splash of urgency. I'm struck by the economy of means here, the way the artist evokes a whole scene with such simple marks. This piece reminds me of the Pre-Raphaelites, but with a looseness and immediacy that feels very modern. It’s a small study, but it holds so much feeling. It reminds us that art is a conversation across time, an ongoing exploration of what it means to see and feel.
