Simon Fokke created this print, "Allegorie op de Schrijfkunst," using etching techniques sometime in the 18th century. The image is made by drawing through a wax coating on a metal plate, which is then exposed to acid. The acid bites into the metal where the wax has been removed, creating lines that hold ink. The plate is then printed onto paper, transferring the image. The fine lines and intricate details suggest a skilled hand, carefully manipulating the etching tools. The material of the print itself, paper, takes on a different dimension when you consider the labor involved in its creation. It's a testament to the artist's technical ability, but also a product of the broader printmaking industry that developed in the early modern period. So, while the subject may be allegorical and high-minded, the print itself is deeply rooted in the material processes and social context of its time.
