Edward Avedisian made this painting, titled ‘Green,’ with luscious strokes of paint, and it’s like the painting came into being through a series of intuitive decisions, a real dance between the artist and the canvas. I can imagine Avedisian standing here, brush in hand, surrounded by pots of yellow, green, and orange paint, wondering where to make his next mark. What he might have been thinking when he made it? Did he have an idea that this would be ‘Green’? Or did it emerge as he went on? The paint is applied with varying degrees of thickness, from the drippy lines to the solid rectangles. Look at the splatters in the central square! They feel so joyful and spontaneous. It's a reminder that artists are constantly learning from one another, riffing off ideas across generations. Painting, at its best, is an invitation to embrace ambiguity. There’s no single right way to see it or understand it.
