Paul Signac painted "Antibes, thunderstorms" with oil on canvas, sometime around 1919. Signac’s brushstrokes are like individual musical notes, each dot a conscious decision in a symphony of color. I just love the way these dots dance on the surface, creating this shimmering effect, it’s as if the whole scene is alive and breathing. The texture is built up from these tiny, deliberate marks, and the colors blend optically in our eyes. It's an almost scientific approach, yet the feeling is so poetic. Look at that area of the sea, how Signac layers blues and greens. Those little dashes of contrasting colors are so exciting. Signac was super influenced by Seurat, but you can sense him starting to push against the rigid system. It's all about how art is this ongoing conversation, each artist responding to what came before.
