Here we have pages six and seven from a photo book of the Algemeene Vereeniging van Rubberplanters ter Oostkust van Sumatra, or A.V.R.O.S., by J.W. Meyster. It’s difficult to date precisely, but judging by the sepia tones, this was likely created in the early 20th century. Looking at this photograph, what grabs me is the geometric pattern in the library. Check out that desk! All angles. It’s contrasted with the soft lighting, and the curved, organic shapes of the plants outside the window. I think Meyster's work is all about balance. These photos remind me of Bernd and Hilla Becher, the German photographers who systematically documented industrial structures. Like them, Meyster seems interested in capturing the quiet beauty of functional spaces. There’s a calmness here, but it’s also filled with unspoken stories. It’s about seeing beauty in the everyday, and finding a way to preserve it.
