J.H. Pluygers made this etching, "Portret van een onbekende man met baard," or "Portrait of an unknown man with a beard," but we can still glean insights into the construction of identity from this historical portrait. In previous eras, a beard was a symbol of masculinity, wisdom, and status. Pluygers uses meticulous strokes to depict a man with a long beard and distinct features and gives us a glimpse into the values and social norms of the time. The man’s gaze drifts to the right, as if he is peering into the future. This piece prompts us to consider how identity is constructed and perceived. How do societal expectations and personal expression intersect? What does it mean to capture a moment in time through art, and how does that moment speak to us across generations?
