Nick Alm, born in 1985, painted "Cornelia's Winter" with what seems like watercolour, or maybe very thin oils to get that translucent quality. I always think about the physicality of paint, and here, the watery quality really enhances the feeling of cold, like the colours have been diluted by the snow. There's something about the way the black coat anchors the composition. That solid, opaque form against the muted, almost ghostly background creates a real sense of depth. It's like she's a figure in a dream. Look closely at the way the snow is rendered; it's not just white, but a whole spectrum of greys and blues. That attention to detail is what elevates this piece, allowing you to feel that chill, that loneliness. This piece reminds me of some of Gerhard Richter's figurative works. Both artists create a sense of detachment through their unique painting techniques, but ultimately, art is always a conversation, and there's no right or wrong way to interpret it.
