Édouard Vuillard made this theatre set design using oil paint on cardboard. It's got these beautiful, muted earth tones with touches of blue, creating a cozy, yet slightly melancholic, atmosphere. I can imagine Vuillard, in his studio, conjuring up this interior. Maybe he was thinking about the play, or maybe he was just letting the colors and shapes guide him. There’s a stillness in the scene, but the brushstrokes feel alive, like he’s capturing a fleeting moment. I wonder how much of his own personal space made it into the painting? Look at how he layers the paint to create texture, especially in the walls and the wooden beams. That red blob punctuates the muted palette. The way Vuillard handles the light, filtering it through the window, reminds me of other painters like Bonnard. We're all inspired by each other, right?
