Curatorial notes

This glass paperweight was produced by the Boston and Sandwich Glass Company sometime between 1825 and 1888. Encased within clear glass is a complex arrangement of millefiori and lampwork. The eye is immediately drawn to the central floral motif, a vibrant cluster of petals in shades of red, blue, and yellow. It is carefully placed within a swirling latticino pattern. This design creates a dynamic contrast between the static floral element and the fluid, almost hypnotic, background. Consider the delicate balance achieved through the contrast of textures: the smooth, reflective surface of the glass against the intricate details of the floral arrangement and the latticework. The internal structure of the paperweight invites a visual experience which destabilizes our expectations of depth and perspective. The work challenges our sense of fixed meaning, inviting endless interpretations and perceptions.
