Max Bill made this painting of squares and whites, in a limited color palette. Imagine him carefully planning this composition. He has arranged the squares and whites in a way that feels both balanced and dynamic. I find it's got a lot of energy. There is a white square, surrounded by colored squares, tilted in the center of the work that throws the whole thing off and creates movement. You can see it’s all about the relationship of color and form. I wonder if the artist started with one color or shape and then responded to it. Like a dance almost. But it's not a free for all; it's structured. Like he's asking: how can I make something that feels both rational and alive? I see the influence of the Bauhaus, where Bill studied. You can see how artists like Kandinsky or Albers were thinking about color and shape. Each one contributes to a bigger conversation about how we see and understand the world around us.
