James Tissot created this watercolor, Saint Peter Walks on the Sea, as part of his series on the Life of Christ. Tissot, a successful society painter in Paris and London, became deeply religious later in life, and dedicated himself to illustrating the Bible. Here, the artist captures the moment Peter loses faith and begins to sink beneath the waves, while Jesus, serene, reaches out to save him. The dark, roiling sea and Peter’s desperate posture contrast sharply with Christ's calm demeanor, highlighting the themes of faith and doubt. What does it mean to believe, and what are the consequences when belief falters? Tissot’s decision to illustrate biblical scenes reflects a broader cultural interest in spirituality and morality during the late 19th century. Yet, Tissot was also invested in historical accuracy, traveling to the Middle East to study the landscape, architecture, and clothing of the people, which brings a sense of authenticity to the scene.
