Here we see Alfred Farrell’s drawing, Sconce, of unknown date, composed with graphite on paper. The careful delineation creates a compelling study in form. The sconce, symmetrically designed, rises vertically. Three rounded forms top a fluted, almost Doric column, which then meets a circular base. The verticality is interrupted only by a small cylindrical shape connected to the base. Farrell's medium is the linear quality of graphite which accentuates the architectural qualities of the sconce with clean lines and subtle shading. The light source, seemingly from above, casts a gentle gradient. Farrell’s focus on the play of light across the object and the precision of line serve to elevate a functional object to the level of high art. This attention to detail compels us to examine the underlying forms and the artist’s formal skills. The drawing thus invites ongoing interpretation, asking us to consider the nature of everyday objects and their artistic potential.
