Curatorial notes
Walter Battiss, a South African artist, created "Golden downed youth" as a poetic and visual expression. Battiss was deeply influenced by his extensive travels and interest in diverse cultures. In this piece, the juxtaposition of striking imagery, with the phrases ‘lapis-lazuli hair’ and ‘skin of silver’ evokes a sense of idealized beauty. Yet, it is tempered by the melancholic phrase: ‘and a loneliness in the green heart’. The reference to ‘Xenio’ perhaps alludes to personal reflections or an intimate relationship. Battiss, who was working in a country rife with racial tension, was known for his unique artistic language which celebrated difference. This piece seems to echo that sentiment, suggesting an escape into an imaginative, perhaps utopian vision of humanity. While the 'golden downed youth' is idealized, the artwork doesn't shy away from the universal feeling of loneliness, giving it an emotionally complex texture. It invites us to reflect on the interplay between longing, identity, and the human desire for connection.
