Curatorial notes
Christiaan Lodewijk van Kesteren created this image, "Interieur en soldaten bij een stad" as an engraving. The lower scene contains a domestic interior with a dog, while the upper scene depicts soldiers gathered around a city building. Here, within the safe, humble interior, the dog, long a symbol of fidelity, sits expectantly, as if awaiting a command or the return of a loved one. Can we not see echoes of Argus, Odysseus's loyal dog, who, after twenty years, still recognized his master? The dog embodies a primal, almost subconscious connection to the themes of loyalty and anticipation across centuries. It’s an enduring image in our collective memory, representing unwavering faithfulness. This simple yet profound scene speaks to the emotional bonds of family and the hope for reunion. It is a timeless sentiment, forever cycling through the human experience.
