David Lucas created this print of Salisbury Cathedral, and its surrounding landscape, with etching. The cathedral spire, a symbol of aspiration and spiritual yearning, dominates the composition. Think back to the Tower of Babel—these towering structures pierce the sky, embodying human ambition to reach the divine. They are also, like the pyramids of ancient Egypt, monuments to human ingenuity and collective effort, meant to stand for eternity. Notice how in Lucas's print, the cathedral is framed by dramatic, almost turbulent weather, yet is struck by rays of sunlight. This contrast may evoke feelings of both awe and trepidation. Light and shadow seem to battle in the skies, and play across the land. These strong contrasts resonate with inner psychological states, and the struggle to reconcile earthly existence with spiritual ideals.
