Curatorial notes
Jan Willem Nortier created this artwork of a farm on the Reeuwijkse Plassen using black chalk. Notice the trees in the wind, and the dramatically clouded sky: they are potent symbols of the sublime, where nature's raw power evokes both awe and a touch of terror. The wind-swept trees echo motifs seen in earlier Romantic landscapes, like those of Caspar David Friedrich, embodying the soul's struggle against the forces of fate. Yet, here, the presence of the farmhouse introduces a counterpoint: a symbol of human resilience and the enduring spirit of domesticity against nature's sublime power. Such a dichotomy reminds us of the human need to find harmony between our inner selves and the overwhelming forces of nature, a quest that continually resurfaces across centuries. The swirling clouds, like the restless psyche, mirror internal emotional states, engaging viewers on a subconscious level. This is a constant theme in art, and it reflects our primal connection to the world.
