This line drawing of two figures was made by Reijer Stolk, but when is a bit of a mystery. It’s like a map of an idea, a thought sketched out with a few lines. It feels immediate, like something he needed to get down quickly before it disappeared. I wonder what Stolk was thinking about when he made this. Was he trying to capture a fleeting moment, an emotion, or was he just playing around with line and form? Maybe it's a bit of both. Look at how the lines loop and connect, building up the form. There's a real sense of movement and energy there, like he's trying to capture the essence of these two figures in as few strokes as possible. It reminds me a little of Matisse, or maybe even some of the early Surrealist drawings. It is like artists are always having a conversation across time, riffing off each other's ideas and pushing the boundaries of what’s possible.
