Giuliana Lazzerini made this picture of Whitby, using I guess, linocut techniques. It has a limited palette of purples, grays, and whites, and a pink accent. I’m thinking about how the artist might have started. Did she do sketches beforehand? Or just dive right into carving the lino? Each cut is so decisive! I can imagine the satisfaction of peeling away the lino to reveal the image beneath. There’s something very satisfying about the graphic quality of printmaking. Each shape is distinct, but they all work together to create a unified composition. And that pink boat! It's like a little pop of joy in an otherwise subdued scene. It reminds me of some of the early British printmakers. The way they captured the essence of a place with just a few simple lines and colors. Painting, like printmaking, is always in dialogue with the past. Each artist building on the ideas and techniques of those who came before. It's like a big, ongoing conversation across time.
