Kazimir Malevich gives us a wedding scene, a procession really, that feels both grounded and dreamy. I love how the figures, with their top hats and bright robes, are set against this backdrop of rolling hills and a winding path. It makes me think about how the personal and the social intersect. What was he thinking about while he was making this? Was he also thinking about the changing social and political landscape around him? Or was it just a wedding that he witnessed? There's something so playful about the way he uses color and form, how the white of the bride's gown pops against the greens and yellows of the landscape, and that the red dots on the bride’s dress are echoed in the other figures’ clothing. I imagine him layering the colours, stepping back and then adding more, finding a balance between representation and abstraction that feels so fresh. For me painting is always about this kind of conversation across time, where one gesture inspires another, and where ambiguity and uncertainty are not weaknesses, but opportunities for connection and reflection.
