Leonor Fini made this painting, *La gourmandise*, and it’s like stepping into a dream, isn’t it? The palette is muted, almost like a faded memory, with soft pinks and browns that give it this air of… sweetness, maybe? Imagine Fini at her easel, mixing those colours, trying to capture the feel of desire, of wanting. The figure is pale, surrounded by all this, well, stuff. Jars of fruit, little cakes, a kind of still life that’s also a portrait. It's interesting that she doesn't look at the viewer, but is caught up in her own world of contemplation. It reminds me of other surrealists playing with the idea of the feast, like Dorothea Tanning’s slightly claustrophobic interiors, but Fini brings a certain self-awareness, a knowingness. Artists are always looking at one another’s work, borrowing ideas, and pushing them further. It's like we're all in this big conversation about what it means to see and feel. And painting? It lets us say things words can't touch.
