Richard Nicolaüs Roland Holst created this drawing, Stellage, using graphite. Notice how the lines are sparse, almost tentative, creating a skeletal framework that barely suggests a structure. The composition, dominated by empty space, prompts us to consider what is not there, as much as what is. Holst employs a minimalist approach, reducing the subject to its most basic components. The lines function as signifiers, hinting at form without fully committing to it. This sparseness invites contemplation on the nature of representation itself. Is it the artist's intention to capture the object, or to explore the very act of perception and the structural essence of form? In its incomplete state, Stellage becomes a field of possibilities, a site for the viewer to project meaning, and actively participate in the artwork's completion. It is a reminder that art is not a fixed entity but a dynamic interplay between the object, the artist, and the observer.
