Robert Frank’s photographic contact sheet presents a series of images that capture fleeting moments from everyday life. The recurring motif of people asleep evokes a sense of vulnerability and surrender. This theme of slumber appears throughout art history, from classical sculptures of sleeping gods to Renaissance depictions of dreamy figures. But here, it is not idealized, but raw. This challenges the Romantic notion of sleep as a peaceful escape, instead revealing it as a public display of exhaustion. There is a cyclical pattern from a state of consciousness to unconsciousness. This harkens back to ancient rituals where sleep and dreams were seen as portals to divine knowledge, a connection to the collective unconscious, a state where our deepest fears and hopes reside. This intimate glimpse into the lives of ordinary people allows us to reflect on our shared humanity.
