Robert Frank made this contact sheet of "Segal farm no number" using photography. It's like a series of sketches, a visual notepad of Frank's thoughts. The grainy black and white images create a melancholic, reflective mood. Frank’s contact sheets are raw, immediate, and less about the perfect shot and more about the process. He has captured a range of exposures and angles, playing with light and shadow. Notice how the images vary from starkly lit fields to the dark, looming presence of the barn. The surface of the sheet itself is matte, and the texture is defined by the individual frames and sprocket holes, a reminder of the film's physical presence. It allows us to see the artist at work, editing, and deciding, thinking through his medium. Frank’s work reminds me a bit of Walker Evans, but more personal, more about feeling than documentation. Ultimately, the sequence of images suggests a story without a clear narrative, embracing ambiguity and the multiple possibilities of a place.
