Laszlo Mednyanszky created ‘Evanescence’ using oil paints and canvas. The loose brushwork and earthy tones weren't accidental, but a deliberate choice to convey a certain kind of reality. Looking at the materiality of the painting, the coarse canvas texture seems to merge with the scene's rough ground. Mednyanszky’s thick application of paint adds a tactile quality, almost as if one could feel the weight of the bodies and the earth beneath. The browns and greens meld, blurring the distinction between the figures and the landscape, suggesting their merging with the earth. Although using traditional art material, this somber depiction speaks volumes about the social context in which it was made, capturing the precariousness of life and the toll of conflict, giving voice to the unseen and unheard. By considering the artist's process and the materials used, we understand how deeply the art is connected to the human experience.
