This photograph of two people standing in front of the home of 'C. Kroese', was taken at the Toentoengan enterprise of the Deli Company on Sumatra. There's an anonymity to this image, which I can relate to. Often the best work comes when we're not sure who's watching, right? We just get on with it, in our own way. I wonder who these people are? What kind of life did they have there in Sumatra? What kind of energy did they bring to this place? There’s something about the directness of photography, the way it captures a specific moment in time. This image allows for a sort of seeing that reveals the subtle textures and forms, almost like drawing with light. It reminds us to appreciate the range of gestures we can make when observing something, some place, some person. Like a good painting, this photograph offers a way of seeing, feeling, and thinking about the world, a space for multiple interpretations, and ongoing exchange across time.
