This serene print of radishes in a dish was made by Frans Everbag, and I love the way it looks like it was made with a soft pencil. The colours are understated, and the composition is simple, yet it makes me want to grab one and bite into its spicy freshness. I like the way the leaves sprawl out in different directions, some droopy, some erect. You can sense the artist's sensitivity and empathy for the subject. I am reminded of Morandi, and his obsession with the humble vase. Perhaps Everbag was similarly drawn to the subtle nuances of light, shadow, and form in the everyday. Or maybe he was just hungry! Either way, the painting captures a moment of quiet contemplation. I feel as though I have entered into a dialogue with the artist and his world.
