Mathieu Lauweriks made this design for a folding screen with pencil, the lines measured and placed with care. I imagine him at his desk, thinking about the way pattern can organise space, how a simple grid can be a thing of beauty, even solace. You can see the bare bones of a structure, a kind of minimalist architecture. Look how each rectangle echoes the others, how they stack up, making a kind of tower. It’s as if he’s teasing out a new kind of order. It reminds me of Agnes Martin and her quiet, meditative grids. Lauweriks is part of a conversation that stretches back centuries, where artists, designers and architects have sort to create order and harmony. Each mark is a step in a process of discovery, an exploration of endless possibilities. The conversation continues.
