Editor: This is Elena Prentice's watercolor "Landscape." It's a small work, but I'm drawn to its layering of colors and the visible process of applying the paint. What can we say about her technique? Curator: Consider how the artist builds the image. We see the visible grid lines, evidence of planning, yet the watercolor bleeds and blurs, defying perfect control. This tension between intention and the inherent qualities of the materials speaks to the labor involved in the act of creation itself. What does the use of watercolor, typically seen as "lesser" than oil, suggest about the artist's priorities? Editor: I hadn't considered the deliberate choice of watercolor in that way. Thanks!
