Kassian Céphas made this albumen print titled "Woonhuis," or dwelling, in Indonesia at the end of the nineteenth century. The image offers an intimate view of a colonial residence, subtly revealing the social dynamics of the time. The composition invites us to consider the cultural references embedded within. The architecture of the house speaks to European influence, while the surrounding landscape and the presence of the local figure with a horse remind us of the Javanese context. Céphas, who was of Javanese descent, operated within and was supported by the colonial system, working for the Sultan's court. Yet his work also provides a unique perspective on the interactions between colonizers and the colonized.
