This print, made by Philippus Jacobus Brepols, presents a series of vignettes rendered with simple lines and flat areas of color. The limited palette of blues, reds, and yellows gives the scenes a graphic quality. The composition divides the narrative into a grid, reminiscent of a comic strip. The overall effect creates a sense of distance, inviting us to decode the imagery rather than be drawn into an emotional connection. Each scene presents a fragment of a larger story, prompting us to consider how meaning is constructed through the arrangement of images. The use of color seems almost arbitrary, serving more to define shapes and spaces. This element further emphasizes the constructed nature of the image. Meaning arises not from a mimetic representation of reality but through the interplay of signs. The grid structure and simplified forms challenge traditional notions of narrative, inviting contemplation on the very structures of storytelling and representation.
