This diminutive bronze equestrian figure was created by an artist from the Kotoko culture in present-day Cameroon or Nigeria. The Kotoko people, who live near Lake Chad, have a rich history marked by trade, agriculture, and fierce independence. Horses are a signifier of status and power. The rider’s upright posture and the horse’s stylized form speaks to the cultural values placed on control and strength. Consider the role of animals in art, often acting as symbols of power, fertility, or even spiritual guidance. This sculpture invites us to think about the relationship between humans and animals. Although small, the figure embodies a presence that feels both ancient and immediate. It invites us to contemplate the lasting impact of the Kotoko culture and the symbols they used to express their identity.
