Joan Miró painted Paseo a la ciudad with oil on canvas, and look at the brushwork, the way he’s making marks. It’s like he's wrestling with the paint, pushing it around to build this landscape. The colors are so grounded, earthy yellows and greens, and they give the whole scene a kind of mellow, dreamlike vibe. I’m drawn to the path he’s painted that dominates the foreground, these meandering lines that somehow feel like they're both moving and still at the same time, so rhythmic. The edges are defined by these strong black outlines, like the whole composition is a stained-glass window. Miró’s process reminds me of Arshile Gorky's approach to surrealism, they’re both pulling from reality but turning it into something else entirely. Isn't that what art is all about, making something new out of what already exists?
