This photograph, Untitled, by William Eggleston is a color dye transfer print. The colour palette is very moody and understated, there’s a beautiful way that he looks at how the world presents itself, and allows that to be the making of the art. The first thing that grabs me is how Eggleston plays with light and shadow; there's a real focus on the surface, and how the light kind of bounces off the wet road. It’s amazing how the photograph has this quality that feels both familiar and totally mysterious. Then, when you spend a bit of time looking you can almost see all the different layers of grey and blue in the photograph, and the way these different colors and tones interact with each other. He’s a master of mood. Eggleston reminds me a little of Edward Hopper; it's like, both of them just capture something really specific and quiet about the everyday. But the thing is with art, it’s not about answers, it’s about questions. And, this piece has a way of making you ask questions about the world around you.
