This earthenware jug, still containing some fat, comes to us from an anonymous maker. The jug offers a glimpse into the daily life and material culture of a time now lost to us. Though the maker’s name is unknown, the object speaks volumes about the social and economic conditions of its creation. Think of it as an artifact of domesticity, crafted perhaps by someone whose identity and contributions were often unacknowledged. What can we learn from this ordinary object about the labor, gender roles, and class structures of its time? Consider the residue of fat clinging to its interior. This is a physical link to past lives, of meals prepared and shared. What stories could this humble vessel tell about the kitchens, families, and communities in which it played a role? The jug invites us to reflect on the value we assign to objects and individuals, prompting a deeper exploration of history through the lens of the everyday.
