Here we have ‘Überwindungen A Exp3’ by Alfio Giuffrida, presenting us with a constellation of modern, everyday objects precariously balanced above a sphere of disarray. The sphere, composed of tangled wooden planks, evokes chaos and the primordial matter, the 'hyle', mirroring ancient symbols of the world in disarray before creation. Rising from this, we see a vibrant, almost whimsical structure, supporting mundane objects—a trash bin, a toilet seat—each a modern emblem, devoid of the spiritual weight of the symbols of old. Consider how these objects might be seen as the new deities of our age. Just as the ancients venerated celestial bodies and natural forces, we now surround ourselves with these mass-produced items, imbuing them with our desires and aspirations. The red connecting structure acts as a lifeline, or the ‘axis mundi’, connecting the chaotic earthly realm with the potential for a new, ordered reality. These objects, seemingly random, collectively reflect our obsession with consumerism, and perhaps our subconscious attempt to create meaning through material possessions.
