This initial sketch with notation was made by Max Beckmann. On the page, a figure in motion emerges from minimal lines and abstract shapes. The recurring motif of the 'veil' is present here; this symbol is a thin line, a suggestion of form that obscures and reveals. Throughout history, we find the veil used to signify transitions. Consider Salome’s dance, where the veils represent layers of intrigue and seduction, each removal heightening the drama and anticipation. In modern times, this symbol might be seen in different forms, like the half-drawn curtain in surrealist paintings which represents the interplay between the visible and the hidden. Psychologically, the veil speaks to our desires to uncover hidden truths, and our anxieties when facing the unknown. It represents a barrier, and an invitation. It is a continuous reminder of the cyclical progression of symbols, constantly resurfacing and evolving in new contexts.
