Richard Artschwager built 'Seat of Judgement' which, like many of his works, is made from wood and Formica. The artist takes materials that you might find in any suburban home and transforms them into something strange, almost surreal. Look closely, and you'll notice the way the Formica has been worked to create a subtle texture, like wood grain. The seat's rigid geometry and clean lines give it a sense of formality, but the subtle texture also introduces a layer of playfulness, blurring the boundaries between high art and everyday design. I'm drawn to the way Artschwager plays with perception. He encourages us to question our assumptions about what we see and how we see it. It reminds me of some of the work of Donald Judd, who also explored the intersection of art and design. But while Judd’s work is often cool and aloof, Artschwager's has a warmth and humor. This is art that invites you to think, but also to smile.
