Curator: In the Garden of Infinite Choice, acrylic on canvas, 1989... I find its composition quite intriguing, almost dreamlike, would you agree? What catches your eye about this particular piece? Editor: It really does have that otherworldly feel! I’m drawn to the contrast between the bright colors that seem to emerge from a more muted, darker ground. What’s your take on the title, especially considering the almost chaotic feel of the painting? Curator: The title hints at a multiplicity of potential realities. The chaos you perceive, is it not a reflection of the overwhelming array of choices we face, socially, politically, even personally? Editor: So, you see the 'infinite choice' as maybe overwhelming? Curator: Precisely. Think about 1989, when this was created. It was a time of enormous upheaval, of shifting global power dynamics. The fall of the Berlin Wall symbolized choice – a path towards perceived freedom. How is freedom truly free, especially considering gender, race, and economic equality? The artist offers no clear answers. What kind of constraints and enforcements impact what appear as ‘infinite choices’? Editor: That makes me think about the figures who are left out of the historical narrative... I didn’t consider that the dream-like quality of this abstract space may invite the presence of overlooked peoples and untold stories. Thank you! Curator: It’s about seeing art as part of larger conversations and social concerns. Editor: It has given me much to think about! Curator: To me, too. There's always more to consider within the layers of history.
