Jakob Weidemann created "Den Gale" using oil paints, a traditional medium often associated with fine art. Weidemann's application of paint is thick and textured, creating depth, adding a tactile quality to the canvas, and allowing the colors to blend, blurring the lines between representation and abstraction. These are not the smooth surfaces of the academy, but rather a celebration of the medium itself. The gestures and energy of the artist are very present. In fact, there's almost a visceral quality to the surface, which is built up with layers of strokes. Consider how this approach challenges traditional notions of painting as a purely visual medium. Weidemann makes us aware of his own labor, in this very active painting, inviting us to engage with the work on multiple levels. By emphasizing the materiality of the paint, Weidemann elevates the act of painting to an active display.
