This silver medal, made by Christian Josef Krüger, commemorates the Peace of Lunéville. Observe the iconography: on one side, an angel figure breaks weapons over an altar. This echoes a motif as old as the Roman Empire, where emperors were depicted establishing "Pax Romana" by similar acts—breaking spears, closing the gates of war. But see how this symbol has been transformed? Here, the angel is androgynous, almost defiant, in a style evoking both classical and romantic ideals. On the reverse is a classical temple. Such structures have long represented stability and order. Yet here, the temple is stark and austere. The angel's gesture taps into a deep-seated desire for peace, a longing that transcends time. The breaking of weapons is not just a political act but also a powerful emotional release. It is a symbol that resurfaces, evolves, and takes on new meanings, constantly reflecting humanity's complex relationship with conflict and reconciliation.
