This etching of a man with a cane was made by Jan Chalon in the late 18th century. Note how the cane, firmly grasped, anchors the figure, suggesting both support and authority. The staff is an ancient symbol, appearing in diverse cultures, from the scepter of rulers to the wands of magicians. Think of Hermes, the messenger god, his caduceus a sign of commerce and negotiation. Or consider the shepherd's crook, a symbol of guidance and care, which evolved into the bishop's crosier, now representing spiritual leadership. Across time, the staff has appeared as a sign of power, protection, and connection to the earthly and divine. What do you think it represents here? Does it represent old age, or something else? The collective memory we all share imbues this image with layers of meaning, resonating within our subconscious understanding of strength, vulnerability, and the human journey.
