Flagon 1760 - 1770

This delightful flagon was produced by the Chelsea Porcelain Manufactory between 1744 and 1784, with what appears to be soft-paste porcelain, gold, and enamel. The flagon immediately strikes the eye with its vertical emphasis, a symphony of soft pink, delicate floral and insectile forms and gilded accents. These elements come together to create an intricate interplay between nature and artifice. The spiraling botanical details, punctuated by the abstracted butterfly, give the object a sense of organic vitality, yet their careful arrangement reveals a structured, formal composition. Note that the pastel shades and lustrous gold details echo Rococo aesthetics. Yet, the flagon complicates this association. It is small and intimate, as if beckoning the viewer to confront the relationship between scale and value. The piece also speaks to the dialog between surface and depth: while the glossy exterior invites touch, the object’s complexity encourages close visual inspection and a broader cultural interpretation.
