Hendrik Spilman created "Two River Landscapes with Sailing Ships near Houses," in the 18th century, using etching techniques. Notice how Spilman divides the composition into two distinct horizontal registers, each presenting a serene waterscape. The upper scene’s detailed linework captures the stillness of the water, contrasted by the billowing forms of cumulus clouds. Buildings are anchored firmly on the left, providing a counterweight to the open expanse of water. In the lower scene, Spilman employs a similar structure but shifts the focal point; the architecture and organic forms are more densely intertwined. The vessels are arranged as signs that reflect the commercial and aesthetic character of the Dutch waterways, all rendered through the careful modulation of light and shadow achieved by dense hatching. Each landscape uses familiar forms to subtly destabilize conventional landscape, and the dual presentation prompts questions about nature, representation, and the ways our perceptions are structured.
